EOPYY Coverage for Children's Speech Therapy

How speech therapy for children is prescribed through EOPYY: who is eligible, who issues the medical referral, how many sessions are covered, and the official Government Gazettes (ΦΕΚ).

Speech therapy is one of the core special-education therapies for children with speech, language, communication, and learning difficulties. Prescriptions are issued through EOPYY, in accordance with the current Unified Health Benefits Regulation (EKPY).

The framework governing prescription and reimbursement of special therapies is based on:

  • Government Gazette ΦΕΚ B’ 2106/02.05.2025
  • the EOPYY annexes for special therapies, including ΦΕΚ B’ 4737/2025

These are regulatory documents that define eligibility, procedure, and maximum coverage limits. Because the framework can be updated, it is best to consult the official source.

Which children are eligible for speech therapy?

A speech therapy prescription applies to children who present with speech, language, communication, or neurodevelopmental difficulties. Indicatively, this may include:

  • developmental language disorder
  • articulation and phonological disorders
  • autism spectrum disorders
  • learning difficulties
  • ADHD
  • neurodevelopmental difficulties

The cases above are indicative and not restrictive, since the prescription is determined by the medical assessment and EOPYY’s therapeutic protocols.

Who issues the medical referral?

The referral is issued electronically by an authorised physician, such as:

  • a child psychiatrist
  • a developmental paediatrician
  • a paediatric neurologist
  • or a paediatrician, where applicable

How many sessions are children entitled to?

The number of sessions is not the same for every child. It is determined by:

  • the diagnosis
  • the child’s level of functioning
  • and EOPYY’s therapeutic protocols

The validity of the referral may be:

  • three months
  • six months
  • or one year, depending on the case

What is the reimbursement amount?

Reimbursement is calculated on the basis of:

  • the medical referral
  • the type of therapy
  • and the maximum limits set by EOPYY for special therapies

The final amount varies according to each child’s therapeutic programme.

Where can you find the official ΦΕΚ?

All official decisions and annexes are available on the EOPYY website: EKPY · EOPYY.
